Hyperliquid safety FAQ

Funds are not held by an exchange
Assets remain in your self-custodial wallet or on-chain balance under your address, so CEX-specific risks like exchange bankruptcy and frozen withdrawals do not apply. Smart-contract bugs, bridge risk, and self-custody mistakes remain.

Safety, regulation, tax
Is Hyperliquid safe?
+
Because of the self-custody model, funds stay in your wallet or under your on-chain address. CEX-specific risks like insolvency or frozen withdrawals don't apply here. Smart-contract bugs, bridge risk, and wallet-management mistakes are still possible failure modes.
Has it ever been hacked?
+
Hyperliquid itself has not been directly hacked. A December 2024 report by an external security researcher raised concerns about DPRK-linked activity, but the team stated there was no breach and no funds were lost. The March 2025 JELLY incident was market manipulation, not a hack, and was resolved by validator vote (delisting and reimbursement).
Any rug-pull risk?
+
Hyperliquid was built without VC funding, and fees are returned to the community via HLP and HYPE buyback-and-burn rather than distributed to the team. It is the leading perp DEX by market share. On the other hand, validator decentralization has been a recurring subject of debate — the JELLY incident was a focal point for that discussion.
Can I use it internationally?
+
As a DEX it operates outside the licensing regimes that apply to centralized exchanges. Availability and legal treatment vary significantly by jurisdiction. This site does not provide legal advice — decisions and responsibility rest with the user.
How are taxes handled?
+
Reporting requirements for on-chain trading vary by jurisdiction and change over time. This site does not provide tax advice — please consult a qualified tax professional.
Is no-KYC a problem?
+
Trading starts with a wallet connection, so no personal data is submitted. The trade-off is that identity-based dispute resolution and recovery flows available on CEXs do not exist here.
What is the minimum to start?
+
It depends on the network. Arbitrum USDC deposits require at least 5 USDC; Solana requires at least 0.2 SOL. See the deposit guide for detail.
How do I get the fee discount?
+
Enter referral code EVENTCODE (or use this site's link) before your first trade and the 4% discount is applied automatically. It cannot be applied retroactively to a wallet that has already traded.
